A question like this can be easily bypassed, because many sequels like Sandakozhi 2 and Saami 2 failed at the box office and so did Indian 2. But it cannot be bypassed that easily, because it gave immense hope to the audience in view of the titanic duo, Shankar and Kamal and the prolonged years it took for its production. Then why did the film become a flop at the theatres?
It failed to capture the imagination of the audience for the following reasons.
1} Perception failures, about the transitional cinematic expectations of the audience, between 1996 and 2024. It is of course strange that an awesome film maker like Shankar, who ruled to the roost through his fabulous hits like Gentleman,Mudhalvan, Kadhalan, Indian, Sivaji and Anniyan, besides his fairly successful films like Jeans.Endhiran,Nanban, Boys and I, could not effectively foresee the mood of the audience, groomed afresh, by young and energetic film makers like,Ranjith Lokesh Kanagaraj, Karthick Subburaj,Nelsson and a few others. Times have substantially changed and Shankar seems to have failed to gauge the mindset of the guardian angels of Tamil Cinema.
2} The grave absence of a galvanizing Kamal, by his enervated presence, shows him almost like a dead wood. What a dramatically inspiring force he was in Indian, as the formidable father and the wrongly fundraising, fun-loving son! It became a halfhearted show of Kamal in Indian 2 and he himself would have felt it as a weird thespian experience, in his eventful career.
3] The ludicrous and almost irritating presentation of Varma Kalai through narration and ugly scenic presentation. The invincible Indian grandpa became a farcical tool here.
4} The exit of tempestuous music by A.R.R.
and above all
5} the documentary-like narration in the first half of the film.
However, all said apart, the highly redeeming positive factors of Indian 2 are,
a} The committed and lovable role play of Siddarth and his disillusioned, emotion packed family episode, with his father Samuthrakani and his mother, delivering a gripping experience to the viewers.
2} The breezily executed character display of Renuka as the corrupt Sub-Registrar
and
3} The heartwarming opportunity to see on the screen, departed actors of merit, like Nedumudi Venu,Vivek,Mano Bala, and Marimuthu {only on a single shot}.
On the whole though not appealing, the film is not badly boring.

Yes. The film fails to convince the audiences.
