GDN is a beaming biopic of Gopalsamy Doraisamy Naidu, shortly known as GD Naidu, beautifully made by film maker Krishnakumar Ramkumar.After his successful self-directed film Rocketry, the Nambi effect,R.Madhavan dons the role of GDN, with an innate passion for grasping the intricacies of what and how a biopic should be, and gets into the soul and spirit of the subject of biography, with least chance for any deviation and with absolute dedication and commitment to the roleplay.
. The character of GD Naidu has always been shown as a source of inspiration and motivation to the youth on their pathway to education . Mr.Naidu's self-made craving for innovation and invention makes him a distinct role model for many. His self-absorbing involvement in learning and experimenting novelties in automobile industry, shaving razor making and augmenting agricultural resources, shows him as an individual with an instinct for finding something new that would benefit mankind. Besides these actualities, the film also exhibits GDN's dual perspectives of sharing the financial benefits with those working for him but fighting at the same time with the oppressive British government, against its excessive taxation policies. The film effectively thwarts the negative pieces of information against him as a tax evader.
What makes the film specially beaming is the balanced way of narration adhered to by the director, without letting it turn into a dry documentary or making it a piece of entertainment in cinematic terms. Interestingly, there is no scene lacking in vigour nor is there any scene overdone. In addition to the enchanting performance of Madhavan, Sathyaraj as Ramaiah Pillai gives a remarkable performance with his usual manner of satirical delivery of dialogues, and convincing element of composure. Jayaram as Income tax officer, is stuck to his rulebook, nevertheless holding great personal respect for Naidu, and helping him indirectly.
.A special mention has to be made about Teejay Arunasalam as young GDN, Priya Mani and Dushara Vijayan as the wives of GDN and about Karunakaran for his neatly played sharp negative role as Perungili. The cameo appearances include John Vijay as M. R Radha, the director as N.S.Krishnan, Vijay Yesudas as Periyar, Max Madhavan as Nehru,Verghese Moolan as C.N. Annadurai and Aravind Kamalanadhan as C.V. Raman
The climax of the film shows the Vice Chancellor deciding to include the life history of GDN in the syllabus. It implies the right inclusion of the film in the minds of the audience, to stay for long.
