"Madam,I am your Adam" is the most refreshing one liner of Mani Ratnam's 'Thug Life'. But what else? The film is no where closer to the grandeur of Nayakan, or its slightly less captivating Thalapathi, in spite of its technical efficacy in display. From Pagal Nilavu days, romance and violence are the super centric themes, occupying the creative imagination of this eminent face of Indian cinema.
What one sees in Thug Life, is a much less engrossing presentation, that was witnessed in Chekka Chivantha Vaanam though both the films thrust upon the brutality of brotherhood in gangsterism, that does not take even an iota of compunction into the conscience while committing patricide or fratricide. It looks as though the amazing efforts taken by Kamal,Nasser, Simbu and several others, to give their extreme best in acting, have finally knocked at the futile doors of a beastly laboratory, with weapons in plenty, in the manner of a Lokesh Kanagaraj film.
Hammers, spanners and screw drivers have generously lent their helping hands to guns and knives, to perform the profuse act of killing, reminding us of the revenge plays like 'The Spanish Tragedy' of Thomas Kyd, 'The White Devil' of John Webster and then of course, Shakespeare's Hamlet. Be it intimate romance, or invincible outburst of all kinds of emotions, Kamal gives one hundred percent guarantee for cinematic grandeur and creative fulfilment.Simbu is born again as a performer of high voltage roleplay, in the line of Chekka Chivandha Vaanam and Maanaadu. Nasser is as usual in his classic style.
While Joju George, Bagavadhi Perumal and Elango Kumaravel {in a brief appearance} maintain their conventional sobriety,Ashok Selvan's graceful smile is a bonanza. The roles of all women, dissipate into the thick clouds of wholesome violence. However, the biggest question that always remains as a longing is,when will Mani Ratnam give films like Pagal Nilavu, Mouna Raagam Agni Natchatram and Alai Paayudhe?
Oh my dear Adam, you have become the Thug Life scam.Blood is not your game.
