Two Malayalam films with Asif Ali, in two diverse roles.

Asif Ali's  Aabhyanthara Kuttavaali and Mirage are the two films that have come as pre-Diwali OTT releases, the former made by Sethunath Padmakumar and the latter by Jithu Joseph. One is a family drama, and the other is an action thriller. In terms of theme and narration, both the films justify their genres through their narrative formats, and action quotient. Asif Ali as the protagonist of the two films, succinctly delivers his roles with his usual underplay of emotions and contextual fulfilment of appropriate role play.

As a family drama Abhyaanthara Kuttavaali suitably exhibits the new generational trends in marital relationship, with men falling vulnerable to the feminine designs and expectations of independence and self-focused life determiners. The beauty of the film depends not only upon its thematic validity, but also on the legality involved in establishing the factual position of more men falling a prey to the latent motives cherished by women, whose intentions surpass the ethical component of conjugal life.

As the gullible victim of a dubious marriage in which he was not allowed even to get closer to his wife, but was forged as a harassing husband and wife beater, it becomes the paramount effort of the hero to prove his innocence before law. The inability of the advocate in properly presenting his case, forces him to argue his case himself, with the permission of the magistrate.

As the one month marriage has to culminate in a divorce, the hero has to investigate the hidden trails of the girl whom he married, and prove before the magistrate, how he has been wrongly implicated in the case, besides putting forth the statistical data that in a world of feminist slogans, men are equally or more caught in troubled marriages The ripple free narration makes a rippled story base, an interesting family watch, despite the fact that the slow narration of the events could have been given a little bit of dramatic dynamics.

'Mirage' is a film full of twists and turns and Jithu Joseph who has reached an acclaimed position as a master of thrillers, makes each move of the film nerve breaking for the viewers besides making the characters themselves experience rotational and anticlockwise jerks, on account of every access to truth becoming a blow of falsehood. Mirage is what is not, that appears before us. A road travel will show us watery spots at long distance, that disappear when we drive closer. How often we have felt all friends are not true friends, and all enemies are not real enemies.

At a time when films of heroes like Dilip, Prithviraj, and Kunchackoboban are not many, Asif Ali has become the right choice to do roles with different shades. Both Asif Ali and Aparna Muralidharan have given their best and the way the course of events get unfolded through the changing vindications of Aparna, Asif Ali gets more and more riddled and the climax gripping the audience with the most unexpected slot of mirage, makes the film a special thriller.

From money laundering to gory memories of tragic events and an unforgettable event of sexual harassment goading the mind for revenge after years, Mirage is an intricate spider's web that quickly unwinds itself within ten minutes, before the climax. Sampath Raj adds a lot of grace to the cop role both in looks and role play. Jithu Joseph who gave hits like Drishyam, its sequel, Papanasam, the Tamil remake of Drishyam, Oozham,Kooman {another Azif Ali film with psychological intricacies} and Nunakuzhi, has made 'Mirage' a different thriller. The only flaw is the missing thrust on the theme base of the film that takes a casual note in the last fifteen minutes of narration. But still, the unexpected shocking climax is toughly action filled, and a bit palpitating too. Asif Ali is on an onward march, towards displaying multiple genres of roles with ease and ecstasy.
