Two films between 1952 and 2026

When National Pictures Parasakthi {under the supervision of A V Meiyappa Chettiyar} was released in 1952,this blogger was just three years old,and hence the film was seen only a decade later. Krishnan Panju's straight narration of events made the audience deeply inspired by the film. Parasakthi of 1952 actually had two heroes. Sivaji Ganesan,as first-time hero spontaneously conquered the hearts of the audience, with his not-new-to the-screen kind of performance. The second hero of the film was the fiery dialogue component written by Kalaignar M.Karunanidhi with a force never witnessed by Tamil cinema until then. In fact, even Kalaignar himself could not repeat that kind of dynamism in many of his other films, excepting Manohara.

The instant success of 1952 Parasakthi, was due to its focus on social awakening with a categorical thrust on the twin social evils like wealth and casteism, that victimized the common man and threw forlorn women into harassing hands of notorious elements, that included the bogus sections playing foul in the name of religion. The impact of Parasakthi of 1952, still holds good on account of its exposure of existing realities of those days. Songs like 'Desam Gna anam Kalvi Eesan Poosai Ellaam Kaasumun Selladhadi' and 'Ka Ka Ka' of Udumalai Narayana Kavi,'Nenju Porukkuthillaiye' of Mahakavi Bharathi {all sung by Chidambaram Jeyaraman,} and 'Poomaalai Puzhudhi Manmele' penned by Kalaignar Karunanidhi, had all penetrated into the feelings and emotions of the people. Parasakthi 1952, was actually a nightmare for some, and a new dawn for many.

Parasakthi 2026 made by Sudha Kongura, whose earlier films Iruthi Chutru and Soorarai Potri, created waves among the audience, takes us to the last century, with retrospective commitment and a kind of comprehensive aesthetic component, in presentation of events with an excellent blending of elegance and enchanting action segment. It is actually very difficult to cinematically depict the unpalatable chapters of specific time zones, with a dedicated hold on the specific subject of language imposition, and authoritative prevention of linguistic rights of citizens. Hindi imposition seems to be an unending saga not only for the Tamils, but also to the people of various regions of India whose mother tongue is not Hindi.

Parasakthi 2026 is definitely a very engaging film. With a variety of beautifully integrating elements such as gripping moments of action involving the student protestors against Hindi imposition, the wafer thin but graceful romantic element, the brief, intimate moments of the brothers Siva Karthikeyan and Adharva, the most fascinating portion of choreography, and the wonderfully melodious music of G.V.Praksh, all  put together make Parasakthi 2026, both an anguished experience of watching an emotionally disturbing past, and a cinematic demonstration of worthy entertainment.

A movie cannot completely restore the past. But if done with wholehearted involvement, it can create goosebumps even among generations not directly  connected with those events. In this respect, Parasakthi 2026 has certainly achieved its goal, through the sparkling role play of Sivakarthikeyan, Adharva,Ravi Mohan and Sree Leela who are the chief players of significant roles. While Ravi Mohan has emerged as a stylish and gory Villain, Sivakarthikeyan's natural ease combined with a portrayal of heavily emotional outbursts [especially the one at Madhrai junction ]Adharva's adorable performance and Sree Leela's cute camaraderie, all become value additions to the film. Special care seems to have been taken even in the hairstyles of Ravi Mohan and Adharva.

The nimble movements of Sivakarthikeyan, Adharva and Sree Leela, enrich the visual grandeur of the film. On the whole the retrospective journey of Parasakthi 2026, is not just a revisit to a bitter past, but is also a course of introspection of the need for cherishing one's mother tongue against any kind of linguistic aggression. While Parasakthi 1952 is an all-time reality, Parasakthi 2026 is a onetime reminiscence, representing an all-time threat.
