Once in 1978 in a famous film studio, this blog writer had an opportunity to watch the recording of the dialogue component of a film in its making and could understand how difficult the lip synchronization was, for the successful delivery of dialogue in any scene.It is here one should think of the untold hidden plights of a voice dubbing artist, be it the voice of the actor or someone dubbing for the voice of the actor's dialogues.
Tamil cinema's most frequently dubbed voice during the last century was that of S.N.Surendar,who was also a short time actor in films like Naalaiya Seidhi, Nenjinile,Priyamudan and Chennai 600028. Besides acting,he has sung hundreds of songs for Tamil films,either as duet songs or in group songs. Songs like 'A for apple'(with A.LRaghavan & others for the old film Saadhu Mirandaal},"Aalyam enbadhu Veedaagum"(with P.Suseela in Thamarai Nenjam),"Thanimaiyile Oru Raagam"( with S.Janaki in Sattam Oru Iruttarai) and "Devan Koil Deepamonru" (again with S.Janaki in Naan Paadum Paadal) are remembered as sweet memories.
As a dubbing artist S.N.Surendar has conquered a unique &enviable position in Tamil Cinema.He has beautifully lent his voice through a process of fusion to great actors like Vijayakanth,( Sattam Oru Iruttararai,Satchi and Vetri,all directed by S.A.Chandrasekar) Karthik Muthuraman,(Alaigal Oivadhillai&Paadum Paravaigal) Pratap Pothen,(Nenjathai Killaadhe, Puthumai Penn &Manaivi Ready) Nedumudi Venu(,Anniyan)Sreenath( Rayil Payangalil)Anand Babu,( Thangaikor Geetham) Arjun,(Vesham)Rehman ( Vasantha Ragam &Nilave Malare) and Raghuvaran(Oru Odai Nadhiyagiradhu)
But beyond all these heroes, it is Mohan who almost owes his identity as an actor to this breezy and bounteous voice, that could generate and reflect varied emotions in dialogue delivery, for a vast number of his films starting from Kilinjalkal. Mohan will be solidly remembered for the voice of S.N.Surender,floating and taking exotic dips in the rivers of romance. Surender's dubbing voice became Mohan's. Nizhalkal Ravi is very well known for his dubbing work for Amitab Bachan.He has also contributed his voice magnificence for actors like Rahman, Raja.Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff,Boman IraniAnand Nag and Mithun Chakraborti. Thalaivasal Vijay has done dubbing for films like Vettaikaran,Vettai,Kannathil Muthamittal and Nala Dhamayandhi.Among actresses Radhika would take credit for dubbing the dialogues of Radha in Mudhal Mariyadhai, for Nirosha in Senthoora Poove& Inaindha Kaigal,for Lissy in Vikram for Ranjini in Kadalora Kavidhaikal and for Rajashree in Karuthamma.
The actors mentioned above are known to many because of their vast appearance in films. But how many of the film lovers know about the often-heard voices of unseen dubbing artists making dialogues live in audience memory, in addition to letting actors celebrate their dialogues with their borrowed voices.
