R.M.Veerappan,the victorious film producer

               {Homage to Mr.R.M.Veerappan}

    R.M.Veerappan one of the most dynamic and successful film producers, passed away on 9th April 2024,after a remarkably long life and after tasting enormous victory in the film industry besides making considerable imprints in politics. This post is exclusively dedicated to his great contribution to Tamil Cinema.

   R.M.Verappan's Sathya Movies film making unit spread over a period of four decades, struck the success note from its very first movie Deivathaai starring MGR and Saroja devi, released in 1964.Being closely associated with MGR, initially in cinema and later in politics, RMV became the master craftsman in planning and executing eventful happenings in the field of cinema with prudence and perfection.RMV takes the singular credit for inducting eminent film maker K.Balachander for writing dialogues for the film Deivathai.This was the only movie for which veteran director K.Balachander worked with MGR and this was also the only film of MGR directed by P.Madhavan,a very popular film maker of Sivaji Ganesan hits.

  The speciality of RMV as film producer,was in giving consecutive hits of MGR films like, Naan Aanaiyittal,Kaavalkaaran,Kannan En Kaadhalan Idhayakani and Rickshawkaaran{ MGR got the best actor award for this film}.These were all films made in between the late Nineteen Sixties and mid Nineteen Seventies.In addition to these filme,RMV also worked with MGR for the latter's home production films like Naadodi Mannan, Adimai Penn and Ulagam Sutum Vaaliban.The two non MGR films released during the Nineteen Seventies were, Manippayal starring Master Sekar as the young boy hero and Kannipenn with Jaishankar as hero and Lakshmi playing the titular role. Vanishree was paired with Jaishankar in this film.

  After MGR became Chief Minister RMV's attention was drawn towards the two heroes of the next generation,viz.Rajinikanth and Kamala hasan. Sathya Movies of course inducted the superstar more frequently,than Kamalahasan. The successful Rajinikanth films of Sathya Movies were,Ranuva Veeran,Moonru Mugam, Thanga Magan,Oor Kaavalan,Panakkaaran and the mega hit film Baashaa. Sathya Movies'two Kamal films were the superhit Kaakki Chattai and the very moderate  Kaadhal Parisu.

  Sathya Movies made three entries with Sathyaraj and the fairly run films were, Mandhira Punnagai,Puthiya Vaanam and Puthu Manidhan.Of the three, Puthiya Vaanam became the one and only film with Sivaji Ganesan playing the lead role and interestingly, this film hit the screens only after the demise of MGR. The other popular films of Sathya Movies were Oru Vellaadu Vengaiyaagiradhu, En Thangai,Enga Thambi and Nila Penne.

   R.M.Veerappan carried a Midas touch in giving many successful films. He was also an able screen writer and his entire management of the task of film production, set exemplary standards in film making for the successive film production houses,especially in terms of budget calculation and sticking to the budget norms,to the maximum extent possible.Even now,Tamil film viewers can nostalgically recall his best films like Deivathaai,Kaavalkaaran,Idhayakani, Rickshawkaran,Moonru Mugam,Kaaki Chattai, Thanga Magan and the ever green Baashaa.The frequent makers  of Sathya Movies films were, P.Neelakandan,A.Jaganadhan & S.P.Muthuraman followed by Kasilingam,Chanakya,Suresh Krishna,Manobala,P.Vasu,Manivannan,Raja sekar,Devaraj Mohan and V.Thamizhazhagan.

   RMV's sagacity and meticulous dedication to the task on hand, be it cinema or politics,are well known to those who have closely and distantly assessed his singular merits,imbibing absolute management skills.Tamil film industry would always cherish in its records RMV as one of the foremost contributors to the quality of Tamil cinema, with an inherent grasp of the mood and expectation of the audience and in never failing to entertain them with decent action thrillers from Deivathaai to Baashaa. This post is a special salute to the film veteran.
