An effortless film maker of enchanting romance

Tamil cinema has its illustrious list of film makers as dealers in romance, starting from C.V.Sridhar down to today's Goutham Vasudev Menon. In the late Nineteen Nineties there came a film maker with a hidden cry for the wellbeing of romance. It is really interesting to note that the film maker who has been dealing with beautiful romance, carries the name of beauty in his name.Yes! Ezhil in Tamil also means the essence of beauty.

Ezhil's first film Thullaadha Manamum Thullum {1999},starring Vijay and Simran became a mega hit film, with a story of untold, but musically realized love, between a man and a woman, enriched by the hidden element of absence of identity of the man, causing untold hardships in bringing the couple together. It is a tale of serene love that Ezhil focused on his narration, and the musical component of the film, from the tuning glory of S.A Rajkumar, added to the tremendous vibe of the film, with songs like Innisai Paadivarum Ilam kaatrukku Uruvamillai, Megamaai Vandhu Pokirein,Thodu Thodu Enave Vaanavil, and Irubadhukodi, which literally captivated the audience as an enriching aesthetic experience. The dialogue component, the lyrical element, and the emotional exuberance delivered by Vijay and Simran, made the film worthy as a wonderful cinematic event. The clean narration of Ezhil, was an added feather to the film.

Ezhil's next film Pennin Manadhai Thottu starring Prabhu Deva and Jaya Seal, was again a love story with action filled sequences relating to Sarath Kumar who played a guest role as the elder brother of Prabhu Deva. It was a story of medicos and the film is specially  remembered for the unique comedy segment of late Vivek who frequently caused nuisance at mid night to his professor {N.Mathrubootham who played the role of Professor Das} purely on account of the fact, that the professor had told his students that they could clear their doubts in subject, any time from him, The best part of  the joke was, Vivek asking his professor at midnight, to clear his doubt,if his name was mere Das or Lord Labakh Das.Vivek's comedy scenes were another contributing factor for the success of the film.

The two films that Ezhil did with Ajith were Poovellaam Un Vaasam and Raja. While the former focused on the theme of friendship of three generations and the romance element covering Ajith and Jyothika, the latter was a love tale of mistaken identity. In both the films Jyothikha's role play was as much dynamic and demonstrative as that of Ajith.Priyanka Trivedhi did a breezy role in Raja.Whereas Poovellaam Un vaasam with the compact cast of Nagesh V.S.Raghavan, Sivakumar,Shayaji Shinde, became an enchanting movie of family watch, with glorious emotions of felicitous friendship and grandeur of romance, neatly framed as an inseparable package.

Ezhil's other fairly successful films were Deepavali with Jeyam Ravi and Bhavana as romantic pair,Manam Kothi Paravai starring Siva Karthikeyan and Athmiya Rajan and Vellaikaaradhurai with Vikram Prabhu and Sri Divya sharing the script of romance, Velainnu Vandhutta Vellakkaaran,Saravanan Irukka Bhayam Yen and Desingu Raja with Vishnu Vishal.Udhayanidhi Stalin and Vimal as heroes respectively. Ezhil's latest action thriller Yudha Satham with Gowtham Karthick and Parthibhan, was also worth watching.

What is special about Ezhil's theme of romance is its element of entangled disbelief and mistrust between the lovers due to misleading circumstances. Unlike Sridhar's romances which were unique with a note of triangular love, Ezhil's romances exist between lovers with a surrounding mist of mistaken identity or perception. In Sridhar's romances the comedy element always went on a separate track with either K.A.Thangavelu or Nagesh making their comedy track a cathartic element,by assuaging the anguish of the audience, caused by the suffering experienced by the players and victims of romance. Whereas,in Ezhil's films, the comedy track mostly travels along with the main story line with Vivek & Mayilusamy or Soori & Yogi Babhu enriching the comedy quotient by their casual role play. Family sentiment, action quotient, misty romance and cheeky comedy are the four pillars of Ezhil's films as a wholesome banquet. One can hopefully visit the theatres, to watch an Ezhil film, purely for its focus on the romantic element with endearing elements of warmth and well being with of course the interference of conventional villainy and comedy segment.Ezhil's romantic touch has an extraordinary appeal that surpasses the youth and reaches the family audience.
