The six pack Coolie

It was three decades ago,on a similar date 14th,but in April 1985, P.Vasu released  his Coolie starring Sarathkumar, Meena, and Radha Ravi, in pivotal roles. The film had cleanly narrated the continued tussle between the employer and the working class reflecting a capitalist's aversion for the working class. Almost twelve years before that ,Amitab Bachan's Coolie that had a telling effect in the life of the hero, following an untoward incident during the shooting of the film, made waves with a sterling profit of almost eighteen crores. Now comes the Super Star's Coolie made by Lokesh Kanagaraj with a six pack impact. The six packs are Stardom, Speed, Style, Sudden twists in narration, Sensational violence and Stupendous stunts.

The main flaw of the film is the absence of a strong story base unlike the ones witnessed in Rajini Kanth's recent Jailer and Vettaiyyan. But the void is filled by the stylish performance of Rajini and Nagarjuna coupled with the robust villainy of Soubin Shahir. Rajini is always an enviable hero with his singular charm devastating the audience, by his incomparable and ceaseless body language and the one and only manner of dialogue delivery. Even MGR had to leave the silver screen in his sixtieth year of age, on political assignments. But here is a hero who makes time feel humble and even desperate. The sense of humour evinced by him in stunt sequences is his eternal bonus to his fans. Nagarjun simply rocks in his negative role, and Soubin Shahir's gruesome greed for blood, makes him the incarnation of brutality. Even in the Monica dance sequence, his movements are symbolic of his quest for killing.

The friendship between Rajinikanth and Satyaraj is more remembered than celebrated, because apart from the one flash back scene where we see them both in a car, with Satyaraj asking Rajini to quit drinking and the latter breaking the liquor bottle promising not to touch the bottle again in his life, they are rarely seen in any shot together. A few more scenes would have more fascinatingly filled the almost four decade old gap between them, as contemporary actors

It is a meaty role for Shruti Hasan and she has competently made use of the screen space with her distinct mode of dialogue delivery and compact display of emotional depth required for the character. This is definitely a special film for her. Aniruth'd's Chikitu,Monica and Powerhouse would truly both mesmerize and grasp the fans with a cute sense of magic. His background scores during the stunt scenes are really commendable. Amirkhan's appearance in the climax, was perhaps thought of ,as the icing sugar on the Coolie cake. Charlie's brief role stays in memory.

On the whole, this Six pack coolie will not disappoint the fans of the superstar, though the tool kit of violence accompanying Lokesh Kanagaraj would make most sensible citizens get scared of the direction that Tamil cinema is bound far. The fresh concept of the electrical crematorium would make the living shocked and dead, and call the dead, for a speedier saga of re cremation so as to turn faster into ashes.
