The King of folk music is no more.

Manickavinayagam an outstanding folkmusic specialist and playback singer, held the proud position of being the son of dancer Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai and the nephew of last century's singular voice mould singer,C.S.Jeyaraman,who was also his music mentor. He was both a singer and actor.

With his gripping and churning voice fabric,Manicka Vinayagam has sung exceptional songs like'Kannukkulla Oruthi'{Dhil}'Koduva Meesa'{Dhool}' Subbamma Subbamma Suluru Subbamma'{Roja Koottam}'Kattu Kattu Keera Kattu'{Thiruppachi}'Naane Indhiran'{Singam} and a few more captivating numbers. He has also been a composed actor, with imprinting role play in a score of films,of which Thiruda Thirudi,Gambeeram, Perazhagan, Bose,Giri, Thimiru and Vettaikkaran need a significant mention.

Manickavinayagam was an occasional assessor of the performance of buddding singers,at the Vijay Supersinger programme. His contribution to Tamil Cinema was full of sheen and striking vigour. In his death Tamil folk music has lost its crowning glory.Tamil cinema is deprived of a balanced actor and a singer with a stentorian voice. His composed profile and controlled delivery of dialogues and comments on the screen and on the Vijay Super singer sets respectively, were distinctive markers of his overall personality as a special performer with competence and grasp of context. The departed soul of this remarkable singer-cum actor will  stay blessed in the abode of God.
